This works exactly as described. There's an on/off indicator in the toolbar and whenever text is highlighted it shows a box that indicates the words and characters. It's probably good that it defaults to off because that box is kinda big. I was hoping to find one that showed the word count of the current document on the toolbar button itself, but this looks like as good as I'm gonna get. I'm not sure about the "Powered by APPWRK" in the bottom-right corner of the box... It feels like an unwanted ad, but it's not intrusive.
Does not work when you click on the extension - just says on/off.
